Reporting to the Paper Mill Superintendent this position at the West Point Mill leads the operations of the Secondary Fiber area in all aspects.
How you will impact WestRock:
Responsible for leading the 1,000 ton-per-day Secondary Fiber Area operations in all aspects (Safety, Quality, Environmental, Costs and Productivity).
Ensure the safety and health of all personnel in area of responsibility as related to work activities.
Maintain compliance and enforce all mill safety rules and policies.
Develop, document, and train employees on safe work procedures.
Proactively identify and mitigate job hazards.
Maintain environmental compliance and enforce mill environmental policies and regulations.
Improve mill sustainability with focus on fiber loss, waste generation, water usage, and process managements/spill containment, housekeeping etc.
Fortify sound environmental stewardship among all department employees through awareness and training.
Ensures the dependable low-cost supply of recycled pulp for the West Point Mill by coordinating with WestRock Recycle group, suppliers, and other mill resources.
Responsible for mill IQE program to ensure suppliers deliver acceptable, quality fiber to the West Point mill.
Optimize overall secondary fiber operations and reliability while maintaining acceptable quality and minimizing environmental impacts.
Responsible for the identification and prioritization of daily maintenance work for the Secondary Fiber Area as designated within the maintenance workflow process.
Develop and manage capital improvement projects for Secondary Fiber area.
Make routine inspections of the Secondary Fiber operating areas, checking progress of projects being worked on, reviewing operating logs, checking for abnormal equipment operations, optimizing work efficiency, ensuring good housekeeping, making safety observations, etc.
Effectively communicate issues and needs at daily production meetings for the area.
Lead the Operating Team Leaders in planning daily work schedules and activities for Secondary Fiber Area operating personnel.
Make recommendations for and coordinate repairs and process improvements to be included in department's annual budget, and support MOC/EM process.
Manage area employees by administering contract provisions and company policies to avoid breach of contract, to ensure conformance to work rules and regulations administering disciplinary measures when needed, and to actively support mill efforts at employee engagement and development.
Provide for the technical competencies and training of all department personnel so they can effectively achieve departmental objectives.
Provide vacation relief and substitute for supervisor as needed andassume responsibility for all production, environmental, and quality activities for the entire Papermill area when on call for the weekend.
Continue to develop and expand personal understanding of secondary fiber processing, and keep abreast of new developments technology in order to maintain the production of cost competitive pulp to the West Point Mill.
What you need to succeed:
At least five years production experience of which three year must be in a supervisory role.
Must be knowledgeable of computer and automated process control systems and have a strong mechanical aptitude.
Bachelor's degree in paper science, chemistry, or engineering preferred.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Provide support to the operations of West Points white top liner producing paper machines to expand the capabilities of the process & personnel in order to sustain best in class operating and cost performance.
As such the role will be heavily involved in training development & execution, identification & execution of process improvement projects, managing the day to day operations on the paper machines, aid in the trouble shooting of the paper process.
Direction will be provided by the White Top Machines Manager; however, the successful candidate must exercise discretion and independent judgment in prioritizing work.
Results are reviewed through mill key performance metrics for safety, quality, and productivity.

Accountable for safety results on respective machine, actively promotes and models safety in all aspects of daily mill operations.
Investigates and creates countermeasures for any safety or environmental incident in area.
Responsible for machine production results.
Monitors production, operating efficiencies, and costs to maximize mill profitability.
Assists in troubleshooting and resolving operating issues on a daily basis including identification & execution on long term corrective actions.
Oversees all activities, training, development and performance management of the hourly machine crews.
Works closely with Task Trainer program to deliver training and update materials as needed.
Identifies and prioritizes equipment maintenance according to EAM process.
Identifies, supports, and executes process improvement projects aimed at increasing safety, quality, and productivity utilizing LSS (Six Sigma) methodology.
Provides papermill support as part of the Weekend Call Duty rotation.
Assists in the planning and execution of the scheduled field days and yearly outages.
What you need to succeed:
The preferred candidate will possess a Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Paper Science or related field with two plus years operations experience within the paper industry, however candidates with seven plus years progressive and practical paper making experience including three plus years paper machine supervisory experience will be considered.
Supervisory experience is a plus.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skillsTroubleshooting skills of the paper making process using PI, DCs, on machine, and Root cause analysis.
Strong planning, organizational, time management and prioritization skillsExcellent oral and written communication skillsExperience within a unionized environment is preferredKnowledge of PI (Process Information System) utilization or equivalent process database.
Knowledge of JDE or equivalent CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
Knowledge of MS Office applications with a strong focus on Excel in order to store, organize and analyze department operational data as well as generate training documents.
Strong functional knowledge of the paper manufacturing process including understanding of the pulping process, screening & cleaning, wet end operations, pressing, drying, and winding.
